About Swords Round Tower

Swords Round Tower in Swords , Co. Dublin.

The 10th century Swords Round Tower marks an early Christian foundation established by St Columcille and can be seen in the grounds of the St. Columba's Church of Ireland Church. Rounded towers were bell towers, doubling as lookout towers and places of refuge in times of attack. The tower is about 26 metres high.

The Church was designed by a Mr.Trench of Hayward, near Ballynakill, and the architect was Mr. William Farrell of Dublin. The cost of the church was then GBP2,200. It consists of the church itself and the belfry is a former 14th century abbey church tower.
