Soroca fortress is one of the most outstanding tourist attractions in the Republic of Moldova. Located close to the Ukrainian border, this is a well-preserved Middle Age fortress with stout stone walls extending down to the riverside. Originally part of a defensive system comprising four fortresses along the Nistru (Dniester) river in the East, two on the bank of the Danube in the South, and three more to protect the North.
The structure is circular with a 37.5 m diameter. There are 5 bastions placed at equal distances, making the fortress unique among examples of European defensive architecture.
