About Roscommon Castle
Roscommon Castle is located at Castle Lane in Roscommon
, Co. Roscommon.
Roscommon Castle was initially built as a fort in 1269 by Robert d'Uffort, Lord Justice of Ireland.
The purpose of the fort was for the English to make a strong presence in the West of Ireland and to suppress the O'Connor
Family, the descendants of the Kings of Connacht. The presence proved to be not strong enough because within 11 years the O'Connor family
gained control and built a bigger, stronger fort along with a castle of which the remains lay here today.
