About Muckross House and Gardens
Muckross House and Gardens is located at The National Park in Killarney
, Co. Kerry.
Muckross House was built in 1843 by the Scottish architect William Burn for Henry Arthur Herbert and his watercolourist wife Mary Balfour Herbert. The sixty-roomed mansion was built in the Tudor style and extensive garden work was undertaken in the 1850s in preparation for Queen Victoria's visit in 1861. The House was later owned by Lord Ardilaun and then the Bourn Vincents, wealthy Americans who invested over £110,000 on improvements to the estate. Today, Muckross House has been fully restored and visitors can view an example of 19th century landowning class throughout the principle rooms.
