About Muckross Abbey

Muckross Abbey is located at The National Park in Killarney, Co. Kerry.

Founded in 1448 by Donal McCarthy Mor as a Franciscan Friary for the Observantine Franciscans. The abbey has been through much turmoil throughout the years, with expulsion of Friars under Elizabeth I in 1589 and again under Cromwell in 1652. In 1698, under the Penal Laws all bishops and religious were to leave the country under pain of imprisonment or transportation. It was decided that the law should be obeyed and the Muckross Abbey Franciscans went into exile to France or Spain. After many years of damage and apart from having no roof, the abbey remains well preserve. Today, the most striking feature is the magnificent yew tree that grows in the central courtyard.
