About Monaghan County Museum

Monaghan County Museum is located at 1-2 Hill Street in Monaghan, Co. Monaghan.

Monaghan County Museum was established by Monaghan County Council in 1974. Its brief is to provide an education and leisure service for County Monaghan and to collect, preserve and display the heritage of the County. Archaeology, Local history, Folk life, Crafts, Transport, Coinage and Industry are among the principal areas of interest.

The unique 14th Century Cross of Clogher and the fine collection of early medieval crannog (lake dwelling) artefacts are among the best items in the Museum. The Museum has won several awards - 1980 the Council of Europe Museum Prize - 1993 the Gulbenkian/Norwich Union Best Collections. Care Award and 2005 Museum of the Year Award for 'Best Collections Care'. These are all very prestigious awards and confirms the Museum's standing as one of the premier cultural attractions in the country.

In 2008 Monaghan County Museum became the first local authority museum in the country to achieve full accreditation under the Heritage Council's Museum Standards Programme for Ireland, which consists of 32 standards of professional excellence for the Irish museums service.

The Museum houses temporary exhibitions and workshops on a regular basis.

Guided tours are arranged for school groups. Questionnaires which are appropriate to age-groups available for children.

Facilities
Interactive displays and Open Access Points encourage visitors to touch and feel objects so as to get a closer connection to history.
