About Knappogue Castle & Gardens
Knappogue Castle & Gardens in Knappogue
, Co. Clare.
Knappogue Castle is a 15th Century tower house built by Sean MacNamara in 1467. In 1571 the castle became the seat of the MacNamara Clan ~ Earls of West Clancullen. It remained in MacNamara hands until it was confiscated by Cromwellis parliament and granted to Arthur Smith (a Roundhead) between 1649-1653. In 1660 after the restoration of the monarchy it was returned to the MacNamaras.
In the 1960s the castle was fully restored by the owners in collaboration with Shannon Development.
The 1.25 walled gardens djoining the castle date from 1817 and have been fully restored.
