About Hill of Ward
Hill of Ward in Athboy
, Co. Meath.
During medieval times, the Hill of Ward, or Hill of Tlachtga, was the site of great Druidic festivals, including Samhain (31st October) which marked the end of the harvest when winter fires were lit. Tlachtga was a druidess in Irish mythology who is said to have given birth to triplets on the hill.
The hill is also the site of an Iron Age multi-ring ringfort which can be clearly seen from the sky and was later associated with the Kings of Mide and of Munster.
It's English name is derived from a landowner called Ward who was evicted from his lands by Oliver Cromwell in 1649.
