Bunratty Castle and the adjoining Folk Park are Ireland's premier visitor attraction.
The site was first occupied by a Viking trade camp in the 8th century, the existing castle was built in 1425 by the McNamaras but was then passed to the O'Briens in the late 15th century. The castle is the most complete and authentic restored medieval fortress in Ireland.
Adjoining the castle is an extensive folk park. It is largely designed as a 19th century village with period buildings, furniture and artifacts.
