About Arbour Hill Prison

Arbour Hill Prison is located at Arbour Hill in Dublin 7.

Historic Site, Prison

Arbour Hill Prison is a medium security prison for male offenders. The prison adjoins Arbour Hill cemetery which contains a memorial to those that died in the 1916 Easter Rising. Padraig Pearse, James Connolly, John McBride, Joseph Plunkett and others were buried here in a mass, unmarked grave following their execution at nearby Kilmainham Gaol in 1916.

The prison forms part of a tripartite facade that also includes the prison chapel, the Church of the Sacred Heart and the Royal Military Barracks (later to become Collins Brarracks when handed over to the Irish Free State in 1922 by the British Authorities). This complex of buildings was original designed by Jacob Owens in 1835, rebuilt by Joshua Webb in 1845 and completed in 1848. The prison was originally used to house military prisoners.
