About Roscommon Abbey

Roscommon Abbey in Roscommon, Co. Roscommon.

Located south of Roscommon town is the ruins of Roscommon Abbey. The Abbey was founded by Felim O'Connor, the king of Connacht 750 years ago and his remains were buried in the Abbey in 1265. Although the majority of the Abbey is in ruins, the tomb of Felim O'Connor still remains intact with a stone king dressed in a long robe and mantle laying on top. It is not known why it is called an Abbey rather than a friary considering it was built for the Dominican friars.
