Former Machaire Rois Church

Church of Ireland Church with adjoining graveyard

This ancient church is a noteworthy feature situated in Magheross located on the outskirts of Carrickmacross town. The church is of historical importance to the area. There is a local tradition that St. Finbarr visited Carrickmacross and founded a Church on the site where the current Church stands. During the Ulster rising of the 1590's, the Church was used by forces of Queen Elizabeth 1 of England as a garrison force. It was attacked and burned by a local clan, the MacMahon's of Farney. The MacMahon's burned it again during the rising of 1641, this time to prevent it from being used by the forces of the English crown. The Church was rebuilt in 1682 and continued in use until the late 17th century until the congregation transferred to the new Church of St. Finbarr's on the main street of Carrickmacross.
