About myPOIs

The Past, The Present...

myPOIs may very well be the same people that sold you a sat-nav or accessory from our online store www.mysatnav.ie.

We first started selling sat-nav online in 2005 and realised very early on that both road and POI coverage for Ireland was awful. It has taken several years for the road network to come up to scratch on sat-nav devices but points of interest (POIs) coverage, while improving all the time, still has a long way to go. This is true of all sat-navs - Garmin, TomTom and others.

In the early days, we built a database of industrial estates and hospitals and started to supply this to our customers. Soon we had people enquiring specifically about POIs and wondering when we were releasing more.

What started out as two categories has now become 71 categories consisting of up to 50,000 points of interest for the whole of Ireland, with a further 20,000 points yet to be released.

Collecting, geocoding and verfiying POIs is a difficult process, especially in Ireland where there is no postcode system. If it was easy Navteq and TeleAtlas (the two major digital mapping companies) would already be doing it - they aren't because it isn't!  Due to these complexities and economic realities, anything that is collected by us is available through a paid subscription.  All POI information that is supplied by our partners such as the AA, Ireland's Blue Book, Georgina Campbell Guides is available to download for FREE, as is sharing of POIs between community members.

The Future

Since our launch in March 2008, we have concentrated on building comprehensive POI databases. We will continue to do this into the future and we are also expanding the website to be essentially driven by you, the myPOIs community. This is evident with our new Backup feature which allows you to protect your own information that you have saved to your sat-nav/GPS device.  The next step is to enable you to share POI data with other members of the myPOIs community by simply connecting your sat-nav to your PC.   For example, if you have already saved the location of a GAA Club, a decent restaurant or a good fishing place on your sat-nav why not let others know about it and share it.
